Battle lines drawn over skate park „„ By Georgia O’Connor-Harding MORE THAN 800 people have signed a petition in support of the controversial Halswell skate park. The petition comes after nearly 600 people signed against having a skate park established in Halswell Domain. It was set up last month by Halswell resident Brendon Miller supporting a skate and recreation park in Halswell. Mr Miller said he wanted to demonstrate how much support there is in Halswell for

a skate park. “When I talk to people at school you get a lot of support for that. Particularly if they have got young kids, he said. Mr Miller said signatures are still being collected, but as of last week he had about 700. The online version of the petition created last week is also growing with 159 signatures collected so far. “Outside of organised sport on Saturday morning there is not a lot for them to do by themselves outside, Mr Miller said. Halswell resident Giarne Harrison, who is helping to collect

signatures in support of the skate park said the petition was a good way to start a discussion. She said it was a “bit naive to expect only Halswell residents should sign both petitions. “I gathered a couple of signatures from people who used to live in Halswell. And from people from outside of the suburb who were keen to support youth. “We already have so many people use the domain from outside Halswell. Last week the Western News reported the Halswell Domain Action Group had presented a

petition signed by 570 residents against the skate park to the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board. The petition presented by Halswell Domain Action Group member Wendy Gilbert said they felt the skate park had the potential to devalue properties and could introduce an element of “anti-social behaviour. The petition was made up by 433 residents, 50 park users, 51 Model Railway Engineers members and 36 local businesses and customers. But Mrs Gilbert said the

Halswell Domain Action was not opposed to having a skate park in the Halswell area. Out of 280 submissions made to the city council, 60 per cent were in support of the Halswell Domain location as their first choice. Mr Miller said while it is best the city council decides on the location, the Halswell Domain is a popular option. A decision on the location of the skate park will be made on July 27 at an extraordinary Riccarton-Wigram Community Board meeting.

Winners are grinners HALSWELL HORNETS players Jauzion Woods, Van Reid and Caleb Crawford had extra reason to smile after their rugby league games on Saturday. Jauzion was the star of the Hornets Nursery under 6 yearsold team, who beat the Tigers 32-28. Van won the tackler of the day trophy for his Hornets under 8 team. His side had a hard fought 32-28 win against the Woolston Rams. And Caleb took home the under 11 player of the day trophy after his team’s 16-16 draw with the Hornby Panthers.

Tuesday July 12 2016 FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK

I’m a little too long in the tooth to remember watching The Little Mermaid movie, but I do like the sound of the adaptation starring former Ara Institute of Canterbury’s Rebekah Head. It is not based on the Disney classic but on the Maori story of Pania of the Reef and the exploits of her grand daughter PJ. It is on from tomorrow at The Court Theatre – perfect timing for the school holidays, check it out on page 10 and 11. Skate parks – people either love ’em or hate ’em. I was glad to read reporter Georgia O’Connor Harding’s article that people have responded to a petition against the proposed Halswell skate park, with one calling for it. It will be interesting to watch how it all plays out. As I mentioned before, it is school holidays and we would love to see your photos of kids having fun. It could be at school holiday programmes or out and about. Send them through to georgia.harding@ starmedia.kiwi and they may even be published. Hei kona, Shelley Robinson

News Horn makes bid for council By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A KEY voice in the boycott of the cafe at Te Hapua: Halswell Centre will try to secure a seat around the city council table this election. Halswell Community Project chairwoman Chrys Horn (right) will be standing for the city council ward of Halswell. So far Ms Horn will be standing against co-ordinator of the Home Interaction Programme for Parents and Youngsters Anne Galloway and Riccarton-Wigram Community Board member Peter Laloli. Debbie Mora will be running for the board in Halswell. Ms Horn was responsible for creating a newsletter in 2010 and the Halswell Community Project group in 2012 as a way to connecting the community. Most recently Ms Horn has been in support of getting a skate park into Halswell for youth and helping to boycott the Wishbone Cafe at the Te Hapua: Halswell Centre. But she said the boycott was not her fault and the cafe had “shot themselves in the foot”.

“I don’t think I have that much influence. Sure, a few people

might not being buying stuff there because of me but the bulk of people would still go there”. She said Wishbone had a particular model that was not adaptable to the community. Ms Horn said there is an imbalance in the way people can influence the community board which she hopes to change. “If you are a retired, reasonably well-educated, welloff financially and you know how things work then you can be very influential with the community board. But if you are young and you don’t know how

SCIRT UPDATE Residents of Hansons Lane, Field Tce, Karamu St and Wallace St in Riccarton, Ilam and Bryndwr will have SCIRT teams working on wastewater pipe-lining repairs in their streets this week at night. The work sites will be coned off in the middle of the road or on the footpaths. These works are part of a project of SCIRT repairs to the wastewater network in these suburbs. The project is not expected to be finished until about October. CORRECTION Last week in the an article on the Halswell Skate Park the Western News referred to Riccarton-Wigram Community Board deputy chairwoman Helen Broughton as “chairwoman”. It is chaired by Mike Mora. The Western News apologies for the error.

WESTERN NEWS

Your Local Views A reader responds to last week’s Western News article on the Halswell skate park: Bianca Watson – I have read the article in the latest Western News and felt I needed to say something. Firstly I agree totally with the comment that community boards are far too influenced by the noisy minority. Approximately seven years ago when I was living in Redcliffs we had the same problem. The children and youth wanted a skate park but whatever the proposed location people living close objected using the reason of devaluing the properties and the attraction of undesirable people. We went to the community board with many submissions – many got up and spoke including some of the undesirable from our community, an 83-year-old grandmother who lived opposite the proposed site who thought it was a great idea to give adolescents something to do in the local community, school principals, parents and a skate teacher. All these people had positive things to say about the influence of supporting youth and empowering them by listening to the things that they wanted in the local community.

Further opposition was voiced by an extremely wealthy property owner who threatened to take the city council to court. Therefore, still no skatepark in the Redcliffs-Sumner area. Are people so short-sighted that they can not see they are talking about the minority of these kids? There are bad kids that tag and cause havoc in all communities, often caused from boredom. Halswell Domain is an excellent location as the park would be able to be visible from houses while still being far enough away that properties would not be disturbed by the noise. The community centre, pool and playing fields are also there. You just have to look overseas to see the success or multiuse areas as a focal point for the community. I hope the community board makes a decision for the majority, not a noisy minority. Ron Towner – Halswell Quarry sounds the ideal place for a skateboard park. It’s not close to houses, and will be ideal when the cafe opens. We could also do with a cafe in the domain.

FLAME FILES

Look while you cook By Mark Thomas – Fire Risk Management Officer I’VE SPENT much of the last week in the North Island. Firstly in Rotorua, where I visited the New Zealand Fire Service training facility for the first time. It is one extremely impressive complex, with full a number of buildings providing scenarios for training from cars to houses to commercial buildings, aircraft and ships. It’s a quantum leap from the bare concrete yard and tower that sufficed 35 years ago. While I was away, fire crews attended the normal range of incidents including, un-surprisingly, four kitchen fires. These ranged from an overcooked chicken breast in Dallington to a full house fire in Barbadoes St last Friday. I almost despair that the message, ‘keep looking while you’re cooking’ continues to be ignored by many in our community. The result can be life shattering. One of the features of fine days at this time of year is that the sun travels low in the sky. This provided a shock for the

owner of a house in Hillmorton returning home just before 5pm on Tuesday. She found two cushions quietly smouldering away in her lounge. The setting sun was reflecting perfectly from a small concave mirror on to the couch. In this case she was lucky. She came home just in time.

Business boost for The Hub By Annabelle Dick THE EXPANSION of The Hub Hornby is set to grow the local economy and create more job opportunities. Stage two of the mall redevelopment is due to open on Thursday after four years of work on the extension. The $75 million refurbishment will see the centre grow from 1200 sq m to 6000 sq m. The Hub Hornby centre manager Jason Marsden said dozens of outlets will be introduced growing the number of retailers to nearly 100. “We’ll end up with a mall that’s a true regional centre so that means it will have a really broad offering of food and fashion to service the growing community,” he said. Mr Marsden said the mall has been the main outlet for residents in outlying satellite towns and western suburbs since before and following the earthquakes. But the centre has seen the number of people they service increase by 52 per cent due to the influx of residents moving to the area. “We’re really playing catch up with the growth,” Mr Marsden said.

EXPANSION: A $75 million refurbishment is nearly completed at The Hub Hornby.

Developers are aiming to bring vibrancy to the west and complement retailers already in the area. Mr Marsden said the mall development will increase business locally with the DressSmart outlet, the Horn by Working Men’s Club new retail precinct and the former Mitre 10 site all nearby. He also says the introduction of the multi-million dollar centre will create a number of jobs

for those in the community. “At the end of the day all those shops are going to be looking for staff and even throughout the build process we’ve had many contractors so that’s already bought money into the local area.” Developers will then spend the next three months completing the northern entrance way as part of the final stage of the refurbishment.

TWO PUPILS – one from Shirley Intermediate and the other from St Albans School – were the voices behind a supermarket initiative to celebrate Maori Language Week. Amiria Tikao, 12, and her younger sister Matakaea, 9, had their voices professionally recorded in a sound studio to help SuperValue and FreshChoice customers better understand the Maori language. The sisters were recorded pronouncing items such as apples, mushrooms, fish, milk, meat, kiwifruit and cheese, along with many others. Amiria said it was a fun project to be involved with. “It was really cool. It took about 45mins, so not very long . . . we got most of the words first time, which was good,” she said. Local SuperValue and Fresh-

Choice supermarkets then put posters up around their stores, with a QR code that customers could scan with their cell phone. The code led to a website where they could hear the two pupils correctly pronounce the word. Amiria said she had not yet tested out the posters, but she would think about going in later. SuperValue and FreshChoice brands manager Liz de Lange said that when the campaign was run last year, the QR codes were used thousands of times.

Changeover for residents’ associations as long-time chairmen stand down

Funding boost for swim classes

By Georgia O’Connor-Harding HALSWELL RESIDENTS’ Association chairman Ron Fensom has retired from his role after leading the organisation through the changing landscape for 22 years. A handover of the role as chairman was held recently with member John Bennett stepping into the role as chairman. But Mr Fensom said he will still be active in the community with several projects he is involved with. Mr Fensom has spent 55 years in Halswell and has been involved in groups including the Halswell Lions Club. In his time as chairman Mr Fensom has worked for lower speed limits around the area, and getting a memorial in Wigram to remember the men who lost their lives when two planes collided in mid-air near the former RNZAF Wigram air base. Mr Fensom was awarded with a Queen Service Medal for his contribution to the community and a Civic Award in 2006. Meanwhile, the Yaldhurst Rural Residents Association needs a new chairman, after Bob Cross (right) was stood down.

ABOUT 1300 more children will be able to join Swimsafe classes in the next year thanks to a $40,000 funding increase. The boost was approved by city council as part of its Annual Plan for 2016/17. The money will go towards a transport subsidy for children travelling by bus to city council swimming pools to take part in the programme. It also agreed to introduce a 25 per cent discount on entry fees to centres such as Te Hapua: Halswell Centre and Jellie Park Recreation and Sports Centre for children of Community Services Card holders in a bid to improve access to pools. The discount on entry fees will be introduced from October 1. The child entry fee for swimming at council pools is due to go up from $3.10 to $3.50 in October however, city council staff are investigating how the cost can be kept as low as possible. Acting head of recreation and sports David Bailey said the extra funding would help make Swimsafe more accessible, particularly for students at low decile schools.

He has been outspoken about a consent application for quarries to dig deeper into the water table. Mr Cross will be moving to Cust in December after living in Yaldhurst for the past 15 years. He said being 30m away from the Winstone Aggregrates, one of the quarries involved in the consent, was one of the reasons for the shift. “It was a number of reasons

Working for children, refugees and emergency services

Brainy students A RICCARTON High School student has been named the overall winner of Otago University’s Brain Bee South Island final held recently. It is New Zealand’s only neuroscience competition for high school students. Riccarton High’s Daniel Wei (above) was the overall competition winner. Villa Maria College students also came first in the overall team competition, while Riccarton High came third. Daniel will travel to Hobart

in December to compete in the Brain Bee national final. South Island Brain Bee organiser Dr Ruth Napper said the competition attracted “the best of the best’’. Students also had the opportunity to listen to a lecture by Otago University psychology lecturer Dr Kristin Hillman about “the brains of slackers’’. They will also participate in a laboratory session on the anatomy of the nervous system.

A ST Thomas of Canterbury College student has been recognised for the contributions he has made to the community. Hamish Simpson has volunteered for the past three years at St Christopher’s Anglican Church where he has established a weekly mentoring programme called “Oasis”. The aim behind “Oasis” is for children to learn values, understand theology and develop leadership skills. Mr Simpson’s other work has included leading the Te Mapa Trust holiday camp for children with challenging backgrounds in 2014. He has directed social enterprise team based at his school called Chariot Brothers. The team designed and produced a light-weight, collapsible and low-cost ‘chariot’ stretcher for use in emergency situations. Mr Simpson was a volunteer at Calcutta’s Missionaries of Charity orphanage for six weeks last year in India along with students Ben O’Connell and Tim Marshall. The trio’s experience in India inspired them to make a difference for children globally. The result was “Tribal”. The project was an interactive

Final countdown for SCIRT programme SCIRT’s five year programme of repairs to pipes, roads, bridges and retaining walls is now 91% complete and will finish in December. Almost 80% of our repair programme is focused on the city’s underground pipe networks. SCIRT has replaced 715km of pipes – the distance of a return trip between Christchurch and Dunedin. These pipes are now invisibly doing their important job below ground.

Rebekah Head

Diving deep into new role as The Little Mermaid will be visiting the city as part of her big above-sea experience. Played by Rebekah Head, she spoke to Georgia O’ConnorHarding about playing mythical Maori character Pania of the Reef’s mermaid grand-daughter, living out of a suitcase and what she hopes to do next. Hey Rebekah, how have the rehearsals been going? It is has been a fast rehearsal process but it is a lot of fun and laughs. There are three actors. Unlike me, the other two actors get to do a lot of costume changes and swapping between other roles so I have the easy job in that sense. How come the little mermaid in this show is called PJ rather than the Princess Ariel we all know from Disney? The show adapted by Alison Horsley has incorporated the story of Pania of the Reef. There is a statue in Napier and she is part of Maori mythology. It is a New Zealand story. So PJ the mermaid is the grand-daughter of Pania of the Reef. It is definitely a more localised story. Have you grown up watching the Disney version of The Little Mermaid?

Definitely. Religiously. So how does it feel to be the mermaid of the show? It is very exciting and a bit nerve-racking because I think lots of people have The Little Mermaid in their head already. I am looking forward to creating my own version. Hopefully that is something people enjoy. How are you planning to portray yourself differently to The Little Mermaid we all know? Ariel was a large inspiration for the character but that is quite an American story so I have tried to make myself into more of a Kiwi mermaid. The wonderful work from the costume ladies has helped. The magnificent tails, with loads of sequins fellow actor Jane and I both wear, make it easy to take on the character. Following on from studying at National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art, are you

two weeks. I have been moving around Auckland, Christchurch and Hawke’s Bay in the last few months with various kids shows. Last year, I toured around New Zealand and Australia for a few months with the New Zealand

Playhouse. Would touring Australia be the main highlight since leaving NASDA? Definitely touring Australia for 10 months was a highlight. It was a crazy experience – I saw a lot of cool places. We started in Brisbane and went all the way across to Perth. We drove all the way, too. We performed high school and primary school shows. Our show for high schools was an adaptation of the Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde. Our primary school show was called Jack Flash and the Jumping Beanstalk. They were 50 minute shows and they were performed three time a day. Do you ever get tired of the performing lifestyle? No, but the performing lifestyle is a specific one. I feel like I have spent the last two years living out of a suitcase, which perhaps isn’t everybody’s lifestyle choice, but I love it and won’t be stopping anytime soon. What was NASDA in the city like because I hear it is tough? I think any performing school is tough. You learn a lot about yourself because it is a very vulnerable craft to be doing.

Maori-inspired little mermaid What did you learn about yourself? I suppose you learn how you behave as a person with other people when you are under a lot of pressure. There are quite a lot of time pressures at NASDA. A lot of creative art can’t be forced. You learn a lot when you are pushed to your limits. What do you enjoy about children’s shows compared to the other shows you have done? One of the most exciting things about children’s theatre is that children are the most honest audience members you are ever going to get. If they are not enjoying a show they will let you know because they will start moving around. It is exciting hearing all the things yelled out as well. What do you think about the relaxed performance for children, including those with an Autism Spectrum Condition or learning disability? I think it is wonderful they are making this show accessible for people who wouldn’t feel comfortable bringing their children to the theatre. Children are always yelling out different things so I don’t think it would be too different for us. Tell me about the other performers in the show.

In the Disney performance Eric is known as the Prince. But in our show, Isaac Pawson is playing a character called Dylan. But I wouldn’t really call him a prince. It is a modern tale of The Little Mermaid. He is just a cool guy who lives in Christchurch. Jane Leonard will be playing Pania of the Reef and Pania’s evil sister Kelpie. Pania of the Reef is a New Zealand character but Kelpie the evil twin is more of a Cruella De Vil type of vibe. So what’s next? After this I am going to go travelling to Europe for a month. I am starting off in London and then going to Barcelona. It is more of an overseas experience. I will be watching a lot of shows. I already have a lot booked at West End in London. I am going to Matilda The Musical, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the NightTime, which the Court Theatre is doing next year. When I come home it will be back into the performing. Going to West End, are there any companies you dream of performing for in the future? The Court Theatre was something I have always hoped to perform [for] and I feel lucky to be performing with them, so hopefully again one day. I would also

like to perform for the Auckland Theatre Company. Obviously, the West End would be an amazing dream come true but it is one in the distance. I saw on your biography you are a member of Equity New Zealand? What is that all about? Basically, it is a union for actors – somewhere to go if they need help with sorting out contracts or finding out your rights as an actor. Just making sure you are looked after. They offer free workshops to actors to extend their performing skills. I think it is important to join this support system. It is also a wonderful way to stay connected with other actors in the industry. I have been a member for two years. And last but not least, why do you think people should come to The Little Mermaid? It is a fun, funny show that has something for everyone. I am excited to be doing a kids show that has lots of songs in it as well. I think putting songs in a kids show creates a wonderful flow. It has been awesome working with Matt Everingham who has done all the music. All of us actors are ex-NASDA students which is cool. We were not in the same year but we were all in three ABOVE THE SEA: Rebekah will play the role of The Little Mermaid in the upcoming production at The Court Theatre. consecutive years.

When it comes to scope and style the homes you see here are just the tip of the roofline. With decades in the business the team at Artisian Homes have worked in all areas of residential construction. There are obvious differences between building a two-bedroom home compared to a six bedroom one. Irrespective, our overall approach remains the same. While we have a sound reputation for carefully crafted home building we also are renowned for getting the right result no matter what the challenge. Building with difficult access, looming timelines or tight budgets is just a fact of life for us.

St Andrew’s finals charge By Gordon Findlater ST ANDREW’S College has re-ignited their finals hopes in this year’s UC Championship going into the school holidays. A 23-12 win over Burnside High School has moved STAC to sixth in the championship. With four rounds remaining in the competition, STAC went into Saturday’s game five points outside of the top four. STAC hosted Burnside which occupied fifth in the competition and had the opportunity to separate themselves from the chasing pack. Wins for third and fourth placed Shirley Boys’ High School and Nelson College at the weekend means that STAC will have to finish strong. It won’t be easy with two challenging away games to end the round robin. STAC will host bottom of the table Roncalli when the UC Championship resumes next weekend. They then face competition favourites Christchurch Boys’ High School in their penultimate game before a final round match with top of the table Christ’s College. St Bede’s College’s push for the finals is all but over. St Bede’s lost 15-24 to last year’s finalists Shirley and are now seven points off the top four.

Close call in Moascar Cup

ST THOMAS’ of Canterbury College came agonisingly close to capturing one of New Zealand rugby’s most prestigious trophy’s – the Moascar Cup – losing to Nelson 25-27 on Saturday. The cup is the school boy rugby equivalent of the Ranfurly Shield. St Thomas’ led cup holders Nelson College 25-24 going into the final moments of Saturday’s UC Championship match in Nelson. When Nelson claimed the Moascar Cup from Timaru Boys’ High School few would have highlighted the defence against St Thomas as their toughest. Previous Moascar Cup defences against more fancied opposition, including St Andrew’s College and Shirley Boys’ High School, were seen as Nelson’s biggest threats before the end of the season. Nelson made easy work of them, though, defeating St Thomas 25-14 and Shirley BHS 35-15. St Thomas had a slow start to this year’s UC Championship. However, they were confident going up to Nelson following a 31-17 win over third place Shirley BHS the previous week. The top four may be out of the picture for the team, but they will hope to push their case for the plate competition. The UC Championship plate is contested between teams that finish from fifth through to eighth following the round-robin.

Fitbit consists of a family of products designed to track every part of your day – including activity, exercise, food, weight and sleep – to help you stay motivated, and see how small steps make a big impact. There’s something for every taste, budget and technical requirement from the everyday category of wrist bands to performance-specific watches. All Fitbit products track steps, distance, calories burned and active minutes. All but the most basic Fitbit also track sleep patterns. At the performance end of the range you’ll also have access to things like heart rate and GPS tracking. All of the products feature wireless syncing and online and mobile tools, such as the Fitbit app to help track your exercise, sleep, hydration and food, and connect with friends. Seeing your progress can really help you realise what’s possible, and investing in a Fitbit may help to take you on the next step of your health and fitness journey. Fitbit was built on the premise that fitness is not just about gym time; it’s

about all the time. So, it can be a great addition to your fitness regime.

There are many things to consider when choosing a health and fitness regime to follow through with.

for example: • What type of exercise to choose: indoor, outdoor or a mixture of both? Running, walking, cycling, swimming, yoga, pilates, dancing, group fitness, a team sport, or something else? • Who to exercise with: just yourself, with a buddy, in a group, or to enlist the help of a personal trainer? • What nutrition guidelines to follow: enlist the help of a nutritionist, or just cut back on processed food, for example? • Balance: how will you ensure you get a good balance of enough rest and recovery as well as the right frequency, duration and intensity of exercise? • Motivation: how will you motivate yourself to get out the door in the first place?! Professional advice from a registered exercise professional should always be your first port of call. They can help get you set up with an appropriate personalised programme, help you with exercise techniques, and help you stay accountable to your goals. Once you’re in the swing of things you may find you want some extra assistance to ramp up your progress towards your goals. investing in a Fitbit could help you to achieve this, especially if you’re a ‘details’ person who likes to be well organised and able to measure progress from each and every workout. Similarly, if you find you’re in a bit of a rut and could do with a mini accountability ‘buddy’, then a Fitbit could be just the ticket.

Situated on a superb 1004sqm freehold corner site with a blue chip Fendalton address, the upside of this house and land couldn’t be sweeter.
